Down's Syndrome

Pro-life alliance launches ‘Don’t Stop a Beating Heart’ campaign in Scotland

The campaign aims to tackle proposals to extend the abortion time limit

A group of organisations has launched a campaign aimed at countering an increasing public call to make abortion more widely available in Scotland.  The campaign, led by SPUC Scotland and supported by other groups including the Catholic Church and the Muslim Council of Scotland, comes just weeks after the decision of the Westminster Government to devolve the law relating to abortion to the Scottish Parliament.

The campaign, titled ‘Don’t Stop a Beating Heart’, argues that abortion should not be made more widely available than the current 24-week time limit, countering the argument that the time limit should be extended.

Crucial Vote on Three Parent Embryos - it's our last chance to have a say

Please read the following text from John Deighan of the Catholic Parliamentary Office and please click the links to contact a House of Lords peer and also add your name to the petition.

This proposed new legislation, along with abortion and euthanasia, will mean the eradication of disabled people from our society.  Such a process is completely wrong and is inequality at its evil best.

Here is what John Deighan has to say:

The promotion of three-parent embryos has been based on compassion for victims of genetic disorders.

Why the artificial creation of three parent babies is so wrong

Later today, the UK Parliament will vote on whether to introduce laws to allow the creation of 'three parent babies'.  It is a move that must be resisted for a number of reasons and it is sincerely hoped that MP's will vote overwhelmingly against allowing the procedure.

While proponents argue that it will help root out certain conditions, including some disabilities, we should not be fooled into thinking this is a simple exercise in making the human race better.

Disabled and mentally ill increasingly at risk as Belgium becomes more and more liberal with assisted suicide

It’s not as if we didn’t know this was coming.  Belgium has, after all, already legalised the euthanizing of children.  But now the reality of assisted suicide for those who suffer from mental ill health and those who are disabled is becoming a reality, with increasing numbers of people using the option to take their own lives, and with considerable ease.

There are reported cases of a transgender man who struggled with mental illness from a childhood trauma and who was killed ‘with dignity’ as proponents of assisted suicide like to say.

When Babies Become Commodities

Zenit.org considers the growing trend of surrogate babies being rejected because of conditions such as Down's Syndrome.

Richard Dawkins: 'immoral' to allow Down's syndrome babies to be born

Picture: telegraph.co.uk

Richard Dawkins, the outspoken atheist/agnostic (we aren't quite sure), has sparked a furious reaction after he suggested that women pregnant with a Down's Syndrome baby should 'abort it and try again'.  He further suggested that it would be 'immoral to bring it [a baby with Down's Syndrome] into the world if you have the choice.'

This type of comment shouldn't come as a surprise to those who know Dawkins and know of his determined fight against any kind of religious influence on society.

Life: a right for the elite

Picture: BBC website

Human life is back on the parliamentary agenda as the House of Lords today continues debating whether people, in certain circumstances, should have the right to die.

It’s a debate that has sparked considerable interest up and down the country, tugging at the emotions of many people who have experienced pain and suffering of loved ones.  It is easy enough to find proponents of the Assisted Dying Bill among this number; people who have watched their loved ones slowly slip away, each day bringing on more pain, stretching human emotions to the absolute limit.

Dwelling on the Word of God: Speaking Up For Life (Wednesday 22nd January 2014)

Today's Gospel (Mark 3:1-6):

'Jesus went again into a synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand. And they were watching him to see if he would cure him on the sabbath day, hoping for something to use against him. He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Stand up out in the middle!’ Then he said to them, ‘Is it against the law on the sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?’ But they said nothing. Then, grieved to find them so obstinate, he looked angrily round at them, and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.

Abortion tide continues to turn as Spain tightens up termination rights

Spanish pro-life campaigners will see this decision as a step in the right direction

The conservative government in Spain has remained true to its word by rolling back legislation on abortion to restrict the procedure to cases of rape, serious foetal deformity, or if the pregnancy a grave mental or physical health risk to the mother or baby.

While the new draft legislation is yet to be approved by Parliament there is widespread consensus that Parliament will push through the changes without issue; given the ruling Popular Party’s majority control.

Most Abortions Performed in Britain are Illegal says Psychologist (from zenit.org)

Psychologist Dr Michael Scott has said that, thanks to the infamous Ground C in the Abortion Act 1967, most abortions in Britain are illegal.

Ground C allows for an abortion where continuance of the pregnancy would allow risk to the life of the pregnant woman, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated.  Dr Scott suggests that this ground is being abused to the point where “we have de fact abortion on demand”.

Sadly Dr Scott is right.  We do now effectively have abortion on demand in Britain, and there is a real risk that sex-selective abortions will be performed in the future under the guise of Ground C, if they aren’t already being performed.
