Andrea Bocelli speaks to Vatican about the importance of the family

Andrea Bocelli is a man of great faith

Famed for having one of the most incredible voices on the planet, Andrea Bocelli is also well known for being a man of great faith and devotion to God.

Bocelli, who was born with congenital glaucoma and has been blind since a young age, is only alive because his mother rejected the advice of doctors that he be terminated.  This decision not only brought about a beautiful son, grandson, nephew and so on for their family, but it also brought about a genius musician with a voice to rival all others.

David Luiz recognises the true value of marriage as he vows to abstain from pre-marital sex

Paris St Germain and Brazil player David Luiz, aged 28, has gone against the popular tide and vowed to remain a virgin until he marries his girlfriend Sara Madeira.

The former Chelsea defender was recently baptized into a Pentecostal congregation and, similar to his Brazilian countryman Kaka, has decided to go public about the value of abstaining from sex until marriage.

Such witness to the value of marriage and indeed the sexual encounter is so vital in this world where sex is to be obtained at any cost, even when it means sacrificing the lives of innocent children.

Breaking down barriers and overcoming division is the order of the day as Royal family meet Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness

Martin McGuinness greets Queen Elizabeth II

There have been incredible images coming from Galway, Ireland today as Queen Elizabeth II and her son Prince Charles met with Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness.

The parties shook hands and exchanged words in a unique and groundbreaking encounter that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

This is what can happen when we allow Christ's love to reign in our hearts.  We suddenly embrace the ability to forgive, to break down barriers and overcome division.

Ashers ‘gay cake’ row: Christians need to avoid talk of war between religion and homosexuality and focus on the fight for personal freedom

The cake Ashers refused to bake

While the law doesn’t tend to agree, I still firmly believe that a business owner should have the right to decide not to provide a service which would be contrary to their devoutly held beliefs.  And this, for me, is key to the whole debate around Ashers bakery and the ‘gay cake’ furore in Northern Ireland.

The bakery was told today that it discriminated against a homosexual customer for refusing to bake a cake with a slogan supporting homosexual marriage.

Why are more women choosing to become nuns?

Picture: bbc.co.uk

This insteresting BBC article explores the recent increase in vocations to the religious life in England and Wales and considers why more and more women are becoming nuns.

A number of women who have recently joined various religious orders speak openly about their experiences in the article, though none more frankly than 29 year old Theodora Hawksley who recently joined the Congregation of Jesus in North London.

Theodora says: "If our society is obsessed with money, sex and power and the games people play with them, then vows of poverty, chastity and obedience represent a profound freedom.

Feeling lost? It’s time to become obsessed with Jesus (Dwelling on the Word of God, Sunday 17th May 2015)

Sunday's Gospel (John 17:11-19):

'Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:

‘Holy Father,
keep those you have given me true to your name,
so that they may be one like us.
While I was with them,
I kept those you had given me true to your name.
I have watched over them
and not one is lost
except the one who chose to be lost,
and this was to fulfil the scriptures.
But now I am coming to you
and while still in the world I say these things
to share my joy with them to the full.
I passed your word on to them,

German MEP urges 'Christian based' Europe to do more to help asylum seekers

Manfred Weber

Manfred Weber, a German MEP and Chairman of the European People's Party, has stated that Europe needs to do more to welcome asylum seekers to its shores; and he cites the continent's Christian roots as being a critical element.

Mr Weber, a Roman Catholic from Bavaria, said: "Europe must be open...nobody can say close the borders, don't accept them".  He then went on to say that "we have to be helpful as a Christian based continent".

Jesus calls us to love politicians too you know

These people need our love and prayers too

It’s not often you hear people standing up for politicians but that is precisely what I am about to do!  As the dust settles on last week’s UK General Election the usual lampooning of political figures and parties has started up once again as we embark on another five year cycle of ridicule and abuse in the direction of those elected to lead our country.

As Christians our call is simple: to love one another and to keep God’s Commandments.
