Solomon asks God for wisdom

Sunday 27 July 2014: First Reading 1 Kings 3:5,7-12:

'The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’  Solomon replied, ‘O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father.  But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership.  Your servant finds himself in the midst of this people of yours that you have chosen, a people so many its number cannot be counted or reckoned.

God at the Heart of Glasgow Motto

Glasgow City Crest

Did you know......the city of Glasgow motto "Let Glasgow Flourish", registered at the Lyon Court in 1866, is a curtailment of the text incribed on the bell of the Tron Church cast in 1631 - "Lord let Glasgow flourish through the preaching of thy Word and praising thy name."

So the proper Glasgow motto refers to the preaching of the Word of God and praising His name.

That's the real Glasgow!

Common Difficulties with Faith Part 3 - Struggling with Scripture

The final part of our series looking at common difficulties with faith considers the increasing lack of desire to immerse oneself in a study of the faith, especially when it comes to the Word of God.

Struggling with Scripture

Many people struggle with the Word of God and shy away from studying scripture as if it were a task reserved for the elite within the Church and not something they should trouble themselves with.  This is a real concern, not only where scripture is concerned but also the traditions of the Church, which have been similarly banished to the side; again, perceived as being the domain of the elite.

Common Difficulties with Faith Part 2 - The Duration of the Mass

Part 2 of our 'Common Difficulties with Faith' series looks at the age old complaint that the Mass is too long.

Part 2 - The Duration of the Mass

The duration of the Mass is often a topic of discussion in Catholic circles, particularly where Holy Communions and Baptisms are concerned.  It is a common complaint among many and the majority of us may well have complained about it at one time or another.

Yet, think of it this way: if you heard that Pope Francis was visiting your parish this weekend would you not happily spend a few hours patiently waiting for an opportunity to get close to him?
