From today’s Gospel (John 15:1-8):
‘If you remain in me
and my words remain in you,
you may ask what you will
and you shall get it.’
These words of Jesus might leave us all thinking that we could have whatever we wanted when we want it! What joy!!
Yet the truth is somewhat different. We can ask Jesus for things if we want to. We can even beg him. But he won’t always deliver exactly what we want. Indeed the true joy is not in getting the things we want but in having Jesus listen to us and affording us the opportunity to build up our relationship with him.
Jesus never lets us down. He listens to all our problems, all our woes, and even all our wants and desires. But he also knows the long-term game plan and that plan might not include the immediate granting of our wish. Everything must fit into God’s Divine Plan. If it doesn’t then it is not what we need.
So we don’t always get what we want when we want. But remember, the next time you ask something of Jesus, he is hanging on to every single word you utter. He is taking it in and he will immediately set to work in helping you, even if that help isn’t necessarily what you expected. He is our greatest friend in the highest of places and he is ready to knead the Father’s Divine Plan into our daily lives. All we need to do is ask.
