World Medical Association reaffirms its strong opposition to euthanasia

The World Medical Association has once again reaffirmed its continued strong opposition to euthanasia, reports Peter Saunders on his Christian Medical Comment blog.

The WMA’s resolution on euthanasia states that:

Euthanasia, that is the act of deliberately ending the life of a patient, even at the patient’s own request or at the request of close relatives, is unethical.  This does not prevent the physician from respecting the desire of a patient to allow the natural process of death to follow its course in the terminal phase of sickness.

Dwelling on the Word of God: Let the Children Come to Me

Take some time to consider this short excerpt from today's Gospel.
Try to read it over and over for as long as you can, and let it sink into your heart.
JESUS SAID, "LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME, AND DO NOT PREVENT THEM; FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN BELONGS TO SUCH AS THESE."

Dwelling on the Word of God: Male and Female Become One Flesh in Marriage

From today’s Gospel:

Jesus said “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  So they are no longer two, but one flesh.  Therefore, what God has joined, let no man separate.”

Marriage between a man and a woman is the subject of very much debate at the moment, particularly in western society.  These words of Jesus are certainly relevant to that debate.

Pope entertains Messi, Buffon and co ahead of international friendly

Buffon presents Pope Francis with a signed football

Pope Francis has met the football teams of both Italy and Argentina ahead of a friendly match which is to be played in his honour.

The Pope met the world’s top player Lionel Messi of Barcelona and later Messi said: “Without a doubt, today was one of the most special days of my life….We have to excel on and off the field.”

Pope Francis asked the players to take responsibility for their status as role models for many millions of people, both young and old, across the world, and he invited the players to pray for him so that “I too, on the ‘field’ where God has put me, can play an honest and courageous game for the good of all.

Abortion survivor speaks passionately about God, life and women's rights

American woman Gianna Jessen (pictured) makes a passionate plea to the people of Victoria, Australia in this youtube video filmed back in 2008, as she talks about our own experience as someone who survived a saline abortion.

Gianna speaks about how she started suffering from cerebral palsy as a result of being starved of oxygen while she fought to stay alive in her mother's womb.  She now, however, sees this condition as a gift and asks: "if abortion is about women's rights, then what were mine?

Pope Francis unexpectedly calls brother of murder victim

Pope Francis has made a surprise call to a gentleman who wrote to him following the murder of his brother.  Michele Ferri, of Pesaro in north-east Italy, had written to the Pope after he struggled to forgive the men who killed his brother Andrea, who was 51.

Did Jesus Exist? An Alternate Approach (by Jimmy Akin via Strange Notions)

Jimmy Akin, well known apologetic on Catholic Answers, tackles proof for the existence of Jesus and the birth of Christianity by using evidence from non-Christian sources.  It makes for an interesting read.

What did Jesus mean when he said we should not judge others?

Catholic Answers apologetic Jimmy Akin gives his view on what Jesus meant when he said we should not judge others.  In the current climate of same-sex marriage and claims of homophobia this is well worth a read.

Walk the Streets of the World and Proclaim your Faith in Christ says Pope Francis on World Mission Day

Pope Francis has released his message to the world for World Mission Day 2013.  In it he speaks about how faith “needs our personal response” and that it is a gift that we cannot keep to ourselves but must share.  He said “if we want to keep it only to ourselves, we will become isolated, sterile and sick Christians.”
He also speaks about the missionary task of Christian people to “walk the streets of the world with our brothers and sisters, proclaiming and witnessing to our faith in Christ and making ourselves heralds of his Gospel.

God’s Message is clear: ‘Do Not Be Afraid’

Did you know that the term ‘do not be afraid’ appears in the Bible 365 times?  Some translations differ slightly but, for the most part, you will find this term written in the Bible on 365 occasions.

When you wake up each day, remember that this is God’s message to you.  He doesn’t want you to be afraid.  Most people live in fear of what tomorrow may bring; fear of work; fear of losing money; fear of illness; fear of death.  And we let this ‘fear’ control our lives.
