There have been over seven million abortions in the UK since the Abortion Act came into force in 1967.  For some, this is fine.  For others, including Catholic people, this should be anything but fine.

There are many statistics on abortion and we could spend all day writing about the numbers of terminations before or after a certain number of weeks and we can discuss whether or not the 24-week period should be reduced and so on.

However, the one statistic that matters is the one on the first line of this article;  over 7 million abortions in the UK alone.  That is over 7 million babies who have been denied the opportunity to live.  Something we can never appreciate.

The debate about abortion crops up every now and then in the public arena and a lot of people do an incredible amount of work campaigning for the rights of the unborn, trying to argue that they are as entitled as anybody to that chance of life.  However, the number of people campaigning and expressing their desire to bring about an end to abortion does not equate to the number of Catholics or even the number of Christians in our country.  Yet it should.

Life is precious.  It is God-given and we are expected to protect it, whether it be our own or the life of a complete stranger.  That is why it is important to do what we can, no matter how small that contribution may be, to bring about an end to abortion.

On Wednesday 17th April, the Sisters of the Gospel of Life in Glasgow will hold their monthly Rosary and Mass in offering for the unborn.  People will gather to pray for those who are unable to defend or speak for themselves and ask for the intercession of Our Blessed Mother to protect them.  The hope, of course, is that change will come; that abortion will end.

The prayers do not end there of course.  Prayers are also offered for all people affected by abortion; be it mothers, fathers, doctors, families, counsellors and so on.  So many lives have been affected by abortion throughout the years, and it is too easy to forget the numerous people involved in what is undoubtedly a horrific process.  And it should be equally horrific whether you sit on the pro-life side or the pro-abortion side of the fence.

However, in Glasgow, the Sisters of the Gospel of Life, through the Cardinal Winning Pro-Life Initiative apostolate, work hard to, firstly, offer prayers for those affected by abortion; and secondly, to offer invaluable support to those considering abortion and those who have had abortions.

If you feel inclined to do something in support of their work and for the unborn and all affected by abortion, this may be an opportunity to pray with the Sisters and with the Archdiocese of Glasgow to help those in need and to perhaps bring about change.

If you do decide to join in, a Rosary will be said at 7pm, asking for the intercession of our Mother Mary to help our cause.  A Mass will then be offered up at 7.30pm and this will be followed by tea, coffee and biscuits in the hall, with an opportunity to talk with other like-minded people.

It really is an opportunity to pray for what is undoubtedly a worthwhile cause.  A cause for life.  A cause for those who just don't have a say.
