First Saturday Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
What is it?
It is a devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary consisting of going to Confession, receiving Communion, reciting five decades of the Rosary and meditating for a quarter of an hour on the mysteries of the Rosary on the first Saturday of five consecutive months.
Why should we do it?
Because Our Blessed Mother Mary promised to obtain for us "at the hour of death the graces necessary for salvation."
During Our Blessed Mother’s July apparition to three children (Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta) in Fatima in 1917, Our Lady said to Lucia: “I shall come to ask…that on the first Saturday of every month, Communion of reparation be made in atonement for the sins of the world.”
No further mention was made of this until 1925 when Our Blessed Lady appeared to Lucia alongside the Child Jesus. Jesus said to Lucia: “Have pity on the heart of your Most Holy Mother. It is covered with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to remove them with an act of reparation.”
Our Lady then said: “See, my daughter, my heart encircled by thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. Do you, at least, strive to console me? Tell them that I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who, in order to make reparation to me, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, say five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour, meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary.”
In a nutshell, Our Lady promises us that we will be given the graces to persevere at the hour of our death if we adhere to her request. How amazing is that??
Sister Lucia later said in 1939: “Whether the world has war or peace depends on the practice of this devotion, along with the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This is why I desire its propagation so ardently, especially because this is also the will of our dear Mother in Heaven.”
How do I do it?
On the first Saturday of five consecutive months you must receive the Eucharist, recite five decades of the Holy Rosary, meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary for fifteen minutes, and go to Confession.
As it may not be possible for people to attend Confession immediately following receiving the Eucharist and saying the Rosary it is acceptable for Confession to be heard within eight days of the first Saturday. This option was confirmed by the Son of God himself when he appeared to Sister Lucia in 1926. He said: "Yes, even more time still, as long as they receive Me in the state of grace and have the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary."
