From today’s Gospel (John 10:11-18):
‘I am the good shepherd:
the good shepherd is the one who lays down his life for his sheep.”
There is something incredibly wonderful about focusing on Christ crucified and seeing Jesus’ battered body bleeding and dying on the Cross.
Whilst Christ’s pain and suffering on the Cross cannot be understated, it is important for us to realise that the crucified Christ is a precious gift to each and every one of us. As our shepherd, Jesus gave up his life for us so that we may live. He was ridiculed, spat upon, battered, pierced, and nailed to two pieces of wood so that we could live with him forever in the Father’s Kingdom.
Jesus, our shepherd, has laid down his life for us. He has opened the gates of Paradise to all people. With outstretched arms he is inviting us to set aside our fears and become one with him; to acknowledge his love and spend eternity in his glorious presence.
