From today's reading (James 1:19-27):
'Remember this, my dear brothers: be quick to listen but slow to speak and slow to rouse your temper; God’s righteousness is never served by man’s anger....you must do what the word tells you, and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves....'
Have you ever heard the expression 'two ears, one mouth'? Well, this is what James appears to be getting at in this reading. From this reading we are reminded that we must listen to God's Word and do what He tells us.
But this instruction comes with a warning. We are warned to speak carefully when we do what God tells us and, crucially, not to get ill-tempered or angry.
Sometimes it is very hard to stand up for our faith, especially in a world that so often frowns upon our traditional beliefs. And even when we do stand up for these the dialogue often ends in a tense argument and anger gets the better of us. This, we are told, is not the Christian way. Yes, we must stand up for God. But we must do it with humility and love.
